Automotive power semiconductor supply chain gets U.S. manufacturing base

Nexperia and Polar Semiconductor have announced a strategic manufacturing collaboration that strengthens the automotive power semiconductor supply chain. Under the agreement, Nexperia’s next-generation power MOSFETs will be produced at Polar’s IATF 16949-certified wafer foundry in Bloomington, Minnesota. The partnership addresses rapidly growing demand across automotive, AI server infrastructure, robotics, and industrial markets – sectors where reliable component supply underpins EV powertrain and industrial electrification applications.

Polar Semiconductor brings more than six decades of semiconductor manufacturing experience to the collaboration, including a 25-plus-year heritage specifically in automotive production. Its Minnesota facility operates as a fully domestic, high-volume wafer fab committed to zero-defect manufacturing standards – a quality baseline that aligns directly with the rigorous demands of xEV powertrain applications, including traction inverters, onboard chargers, and battery management systems.

Nexperia, headquartered in Nijmegen, Netherlands, will develop a broad portfolio of next-generation power MOSFETs under the collaboration, spanning multiple voltage classes and package types. The expanded range is designed to meet diverse power electronics requirements across the automotive and industrial sectors. Nexperia’s existing automotive MOSFET portfolio already serves xEV powertrain applications including high-voltage traction inverters, onboard chargers, DC-DC converters, and battery management systems.

“This collaboration is an important step in strengthening Nexperia’s long-term manufacturing and supply-chain strategy,” said Stefan Tilger, Nexperia’s interim CEO. “By working closely with Polar Semiconductor, we are securing reliable capacity and providing our customers with a strong, stable, and resilient supply foundation to support future growth.”

Power MOSFET portfolio targets EV powertrain supply chain demands

Nexperia has continuously advanced its packaging technologies to improve thermal management and electrical performance in demanding automotive environments. Its copper-clip LFPAK and CCPAK packages, along with the MLPAK format, deliver enhanced electrical performance, ruggedness, and thermal efficiency. The MLPAK platform is specifically designed to reduce overall system cost in automotive power electronics designs by lowering component count and board area, while maintaining the switching performance and robustness that automotive OEMs require.

Fredrik Öberg, General Manager of Business Group MOS at Nexperia, highlighted the shared quality commitment between the two firms. Reza Kazerounian, Executive Chairman of Polar Semiconductor, described the partnership as validation of Polar’s strategy to build a differentiated foundry focused on power, sensor, and high-voltage semiconductors.

Production of the next-generation MOSFET portfolio will advance as Nexperia develops its full voltage-class roadmap for manufacture at Polar’s Minnesota facility, with supply targeted at automotive and industrial customers across AI server infrastructure and electrification markets.
