Proterra’s Onyx battery platform will offer a US cell option, with shipments starting in the first quarter of 2027, the company announced in May 2026. The move is intended to increase domestic content and strengthen alignment with Buy America and Build America, Buy America requirements.

A platform built for heavy-duty demands

Proterra’s Onyx modular battery platform delivers high energy density, proven durability, and an advanced safety architecture, the qualities commercial vehicle and heavy-duty equipment OEMs depend on. The US cell option addresses growing OEM demand for stronger domestic content and supply assurance.

Proterra is investing to onshore and nearshore critical battery pack and module components, along with other major internal subsystems. The company says this approach is designed to reduce disruption risk, diversify geographic dependency, and support scalable production for OEM partners.

American content increases by over 600 percent

Proterra says its broader onshoring effort, anchored by the US cell option, will increase American content in the Onyx platform by more than 600 percent. Orders are open now, and the company says the change builds on its US footprint in Burlingame, California, and Greer, South Carolina.

What the move signals for OEM customers

CEO Chris Bailey framed the announcement around market demand: “The market is asking for greater supply chain certainty and stronger domestic content. We’re answering. This investment ensures we can deliver both while continuing to lead in performance and safety.”

North American OEMs are demanding greater domestic content in response to a shifting geopolitical and policy environment, and Proterra frames the move as reinforcing its commitment to American manufacturing.
