Overview

Rivian is seeking a Sr. Power Electronics Software Engineer to develop firmware and controls for a diverse portfolio of power conversion systems spanning both vehicle and energy products — including DC fast chargers, residential bidirectional chargers, and onboard power electronics systems. Based at Rivian’s Torrance, California facility, the role covers the full embedded software development lifecycle from specification and design through implementation and testing, requiring deep expertise in bare metal and RTOS architectures, modern multicore 32-bit embedded controllers, and ISO 26262 compliant software development. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of hardware and software, verifying operation at bench and HIL level and building the testing methodologies that underpin release readiness across Rivian’s power electronics platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Specify, design, implement, and test bare metal and RTOS low-level software for power electronics applications
  • Work with and resolve ambiguity in requirements, specifications, and designs
  • Design and specify interfaces between application software and firmware
  • Design, develop, implement, and test multicore interfaces and applications
  • Develop multicore, timing-critical software architectures
  • Create efficient real-time software components and interfaces
  • Develop software component testing methodologies to ensure maturity, stability, and release readiness
  • Work with hardware and debuggers at bench and HIL level to verify software operation
  • Design ISO 26262 compliant software
  • Document requirements, software design, test procedures, and results

Requirements

Essential: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science (Master’s preferred); 3+ years of software development experience with real-time embedded C systems; fluency in embedded software practices using the C programming language; proficiency in version control processes and techniques including GitFlow and GitLab; ability to write testing scripts in Python; knowledge of software build procedures and ability to maintain build scripts (SCons preferred, CMake, Makefile); strong background in real-time software component design and testing.

Desirable: Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
