Sr. Manager, Battery Cell Engineering

Company: Rivian

Location: Tustin, CA, USA (Onsite)

Employment type: Full-time

Overview

Rivian is seeking a Sr. Manager of Battery Cell Engineering to build and lead the team responsible for cell development strategy across current and future vehicle programmes, including the R1T, R1S, and Rivian’s commercial fleet. The role spans the full cell lifecycle — from requirements decomposition at vehicle and pack level through supplier selection, cell development, validation, and mass production launch — and requires deep electrochemical expertise combined with the leadership capability to drive cross-functional alignment across pack design, BMS controls, and external research partners. Sitting within Rivian’s Mechanical and Electrical Engineering organisation at its Tustin, California facility, this is a technically authoritative role that will also develop intellectual property and advance Rivian’s long-term cell technology roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a world-class battery cell development team
  • Develop technical roadmap and cell strategy for Rivian’s current and future products
  • Lead cross-functional teams to decompose vehicle and pack requirements into cell specifications
  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with cell vendors
  • Lead technical evaluation and selection of new cells and suppliers
  • Lead cell development from design concept through to mass production launch
  • Design test methods to validate and characterise electrodes, cell components, cells, modules, packs, and vehicle-level systems; coordinate internal and external testing resources
  • Work with Rivian pack design teams to optimise cell performance, durability, and safety in pack
  • Identify cell degradation mechanisms and failure modes and propose risk mitigation strategies
  • Use cell validation data to define boundary conditions for battery and vehicle operation, supporting BMS control and estimation algorithms
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external research institutes to advance Rivian’s battery cell technology
  • Develop intellectual property for Rivian’s battery cell technology

Requirements

Essential: MS degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science with 5+ years of hands-on lithium-ion battery testing experience (PhD preferred); 3+ years of management experience with a strong leadership record and at least one product launch; demonstrated experience in lithium-ion cell characterisation and/or cell development; strong understanding of electrochemistry properties, cell components, and their interactions; excellent knowledge of lithium-ion battery development trends; strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Desirable: Experience in cell development and/or cell manufacturing; hands-on experience with electrochemical techniques including EIS, GITT, CV, and PITT; familiarity with dQdV and dVdQ analysis; knowledge of fast charge development; experience estimating lithium-ion battery lifetime; proficiency in Python for data analysis; understanding of battery cell integration in automotive HEV/PHEV/EV or consumer electronics applications; working knowledge of SAE, FMVSS, ECE, and GBT/QCT standards for automotive traction batteries.
